Regular customers will know that we have been running the stock in the fishing store down gradually.  This came about partly because of the maggot fridges giving up the ghost.  However it is also due to the fact that fishing has become, for many, a very specialised sport nowadays.

We know there are the match fishermen, people who want to traditionally coarse fish but in the local area numbers are dwindling compared to the specimen hunter Carp fisherman where numbers are growing.   To carry the stock that these specialists require now is beyond the current scope of the Store.  So we felt it was better to close the fishing section altogether.

There are many online retailers for fishing supplies and there are some specialist shops around the Cambridge/Peterborough area which an online search will bring up for you.

We look forward to supplying all of your other country sporting needs and of course our Outdoor Clothing section will still be very handy if you are spending time on the river bank!

It’s still freezing out there – don’t forget that we sell logs, coal, wood briqeuttes and kindling!  Everything you need to build a lovely log fire to snuggle up to in the cold and wait for Spring.

Tips on lighting a good log fire

• Obviously make sure your fireplace is in good order and you have your chimney swept regularly
• Keep animals and children away while you are lighting the fire and make sure you have a fireguard to use once it is alight
• Clear all the old ash and bits and pieces from previous fires, not forgetting to empty the ashpan underneath
• I always start with some scrunched up newspaper on which I put the firelighters
• Then I build a small pyramid with about half a dozen pieces of kindling over the firelighters.
• You can light it at this stage, but I also like to add coal – putting pieces of coal all around the kindling and up the sides of the pyramid.
• Then light your firelighters.
• Make sure there is enough draught to get the fire burning to start with by adjusting the bottom of the grate.
• If the wind isn’t in the right direction and the fire is not drawing (burning strongly) then if you have a small fireplace you can hold a board or open newspaper over the fireplace opening which helps draw any draught into the bottom of the fire.
• Don’t forget to clear away matches and firelighters.
• Sit back and enjoy!
